The guy who did The Silicon Teens and runs Mute Records recorded this. If a story takes place in a spaceship or space station, we like to see scientifically sound information about weightlessness or other elements of life in that environment. There’s that weird omnipresence to technology, the scary-but-exciting idea of cyberspace existing somewhere other than inside the computer. At the cost of a certain amount of agency, these marvelous devices will permit us to move unhindered through time and space, and to live perfectly regulated lives.

With it's bright neon lights, police brutality and ninja turf wars, as well as a few cyberntic limbs. Beginning with Count Zero I had the impulse to use the text to honor works of art that I particularly loved or admired. After the War (for my generation, those born in the 1930s, there is only one War), I read Verne, Wells, and Thomas More, and then I went on to SF. Part of that delay was due to being blocked on this editorial, ironically. Anyway, Wasp, written in 1957, is short and just outright fun to read.

Published pseudonymously by Bruce Sterling (as “Vincent Ominiaveritas”), not only did it slag sf’s literary establishment, which produced “stories that lie gasping and wall-eyed with anemia,” but it also ridiculed those up-and-coming writers who had yet to acknowledge the Cyberpunk agenda: SF must stop recycling the same half-baked traditions about the nature of the human future. Writing as authors “steeped in the lore and tradition of the SF field”, cyberpunks like Sterling claimed that the 1980s were a “truly science-fictional world” (x) “the realm of high tech, and the modern pop underground” (xi) met and joined.
