Trained as a painter, Cayce Zavaglia switched to embroidery 12 years ago in an attempt to, among other things, create a body of work that referenced a specific embroidered artwork she owned as a child. Ledsham remembers it ‘was a massive undertaking’ to send large-scale 3-dimensional work away for exhibition, she had to have special crates made and sometimes ‘had to chop bits off to get it through customs.’ Ledsham and Michael Brennand-Wood were often the only British artists at these European exhibitions and she wonders why other British artists ‘didn’t put themselves out there?’ At that time, ‘there were the 62-group exhibitions but there weren’t really any major things so you had to look to Europe to get your work out there.’ Ledsham found the European work was ‘an eye opener’; it ran parallel to what was happening in the UK but with differences.
