Methodists number about 60 million in 100 countries. © The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable 2006, originally published by Oxford University Press 2006.

The Betrayal of the Church is the alarming story of how the leaders of the mainline denominations have abandoned the gospel in favor of the religious and political ideology of the Left. The middle position between relativism and absolutism which this principle indicates was, I think, already anticipated in earlier efforts of Protestant thought. You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.' To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities."

Attendance, membership, and giving in mainline Protestant denominations began a steady decline in the mid-1960s, a drop that would show no signs of leveling off until the end of the century. Still, writing as one with that experience, he invited them to try to follow what he described as "an analysis of the Church's self-consciousness."1 If non-Catholics welcomed Karl Adam's exposition of Catholicism, Catholics have not had an opportunity of welcoming any similar account of Protestantism; and Protestants themselves acknowledge the provision of such an exposition to be an impossible task.

The different numbering and wording (according to the biblical translation chosen) is one factor that has made public posting of the Ten Commandments controversial. Knudson insists that the cardinal principle of Protestantism is "the inspiration of the individual and the consequent right of private judgment," as opposed to Rome's claim to be the authoritative interpreter in religious matters. When Lutherans emphasize that the righteousness of Christ is our righteousness, their intention is above all to insist that the sinner is granted righteousness before God in Christ through the declaration of forgiveness and that only in union with Christ is one's life renewed.

In South Carolina, Virginia and throughout the South, these and other events resulted in regulations on black meetings and black preaching without white supervision. Among other things, the council could not prevent schism and the Hussite wars[?] in Bohemia. Christianity has undergone many changes over the course of history. For the understanding of what is called the "spirit of Protestantism" there is another matter which seems urgently in need of clarification.

The second big split or schism was a result of reform movements in Germany and France in the 16th century led by Martin Luther. Protestants who sincerely desire to help Catholics can best help them by encouraging them to regularly read and study the Bible. Protestants represent the largest Christian division in the United States. But its focus on feeling in the conversion experience often led to anti-intellectualism and in the 20th century to Fundamentalism--a story that has not yet ended, though mainline churches in most of the US have become committed to modern science and scholarly inquiry.
