The cyberpunk movement (which at the time had a number of names) was larger than that and a number of the early influential books are not particularly well known now (like City Come A Walkin' by John Shirley ). Have something you think we should know about?

One recent example is Minority Report (2002), debuting in the months after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and focused on the issues of police powers, privacy and civil liberties in a near-future United States. Ford's Web of Angels (1980) has that distinction, depending on what you count as cyberpunk. Jameson, Fredric. “World Reduction in Le Guin.” In Archaeologies of the Future, 267–80.

John Shirley wrote articles on Sterling and Rucker's significance.[8] William Gibson with his novel Neuromancer (1984) is likely the most famous writer connected with the term cyberpunk. This setting was originally a medieval religious dystopia which underwent a sudden Tech Surge. The city becomes a psychological prison where property near to or overlooking the Infection-ruined “Dead Zones” is cheaper because most survivors don’t want to be reminded of what is out there.

Vergil Ulam fits the spurned but brilliant scientist trope more than he does the punk outsider or tough cop that is more familiar in cyberpunk books. Accelerando is possibly one of the worst books you could possibly choose if coming new to the whole fast paced posthuman chaos sort of thing - if you are not big on chaotic (as mentioned, this is quite the point in these cases), you might not like Snow Crash, as there are some definite antecedents to Accelerando there, so you may consider leaving that until later.

By the end, the viewer isn't even sure the bad guy is wrong in his goals of tearing society down. For an insider look at the cyberpunk genre, we’d highly recommend checking out Bruce’s essay “The Etymology of ‘Cyberpunk'” on his web site. Computers, the ultimate machines, represent the ultimate power: The ability to replace not merely muscle but mind means final power over nature, liberating humanity completely from the intractability of environment, as in John W.

The idea of the plasmate as living information and the homeoplasmate as such a being bonded to a human being is not altogether far from the so called loa of Gibson's Matrix in the novel Count Zero. Stories about nanotechnology or genetics, such as Greg Bear's Blood Music, often fall into this category. He sadly fails, but the only thing that's really lost is Burke, which it seems does nothing but cause Paul to grow "in human wisdom and resolve" (Tiptree 79).

Clark essentially revealed that the reason the HAL 9000 computer went "mad" in 2001: A Space Odyssey was because of being given conflicting orders and, essentially, having a nervous breakdown because he/it couldn't reconcile them. Should be intersting, however, to see some other takes on where our global economics will lead us. Like his earlier book Do Not Resuscitate, Ponticello’s prose reads like a less-angry Vonnegut.

Some overlap exists between the three, particularly science fiction and fantasy -- in recent years, SFF has become a common catchall abbreviation for the two combined genres. Still recovering from the events that befell her in Los Angeles, Mesa Everitt is learning how to rebuild her life.
