Northrop Frye called it Menippean satire or anatomy, and traced it back to the Greeks. The mega-corporations begin to fight over this valuable champion. The cowboys have to "interface" with the matrix through "slotting into" feminized cyberspace decks; certain females, however, require no such mediation: they are already, by implication, a part of it.

Tad Williams 's Otherland tetralogy, which shares much of the tone and content with .hack despite being set in the late 21st century. Science fiction imagines strange challenges and opportunities for us in order to delve deep into human nature. And the quality of the narrative is one reason I can't easily place "Blood Music" in the nanotechnology or cyberpunk traditions which it is said to have kicked off. If you want the grandfather of Cyberpunk, read "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Heinlein.

Meanwhile, some of Synners author Pat Cadigan's recent stories have seemed much more fantasy-oriented. It gives Nature up for dead, accepts violence and greed as inevitable, and promotes the cult of the loner. Nanopunk refers to an emerging subgenre of speculative science fiction still very much in its infancy in comparison to other genres like that of cyberpunk. [7] The genre is similar to biopunk, but describes a world in which the use of biotechnology is limited or prohibited, and only nanites and nanotechnology is in wide use (while in biopunk bio- and nanotechnologies often coexist).

In his Mirrorshades manifesto, Sterling talks about carrying the tools of extrapolation into the realm of everyday life, but everyday life — the nature of human interactions — was only rarely part of the focus of earlier forms of Science fiction, which was far better at anticipating and debating technological shifts than their impact on our lives. The society portrayed in Blade Runner has certainly become corrupted. The "Great Soviet Dictionary" defines it thusly: "A perturbation in the reality field in which a spontaneous self-monitoring negentropic vortex is formed, tending progressively to subsume and incorporate its environment into arrangements of information.
